Barbados Travel Guide: Things to Know Before You Go! π΄π§π§
From arrival tips and beautiful beaches to local experiences you wonβt want to miss!
Thereβs just something special about Barbados! π
From the turquoise Caribbean waters and beautiful sandy beaches to the friendly Bajan culture, delicious food, and incredible sunsets, this island has so much to offer.
Barbados also holds a very special place in my heart. Scott and I were married here 27 years ago, and we recently returned with our family to celebrate our anniversary and renew our vows at the very same resort where we first said βI do.β β€οΈ
After spending time exploring the island, visiting resorts, and enjoying some wonderful experiences, I wanted to share a few things that I think every traveller should know before visiting Barbados!
βοΈ Before You Travel: Donβt Forget Your Immigration Form!
One of the most important things to complete before arriving in Barbados is the online Immigration and Customs Form.
This form becomes available 72 hours before your arrival in Barbados, and travellers are required to complete it before entering the country.
You can complete the form through the official Barbados Immigration Department website:
Once completed, save your Immigration and Customs receipts to your phone or print copies to present when you arrive.
A few other things to have ready:
β A valid passport
β Your return or onward flight information
β The name and address of your accommodations
β Any additional entry documentation required for your nationality
My advice? Complete your form before leaving home rather than trying to figure it out at the airport. One less thing to worry about on travel day! π
ποΈ Did You Know ALL Beaches in Barbados Are Public?
This is something I absolutely love about Barbados!
There are no private beaches in Barbados.
Even if a beautiful stretch of beach is located in front of a luxury resort, the beach itself is public.
That means you can explore some of the islandβs most beautiful coastlines without having to stay at the resorts located along them.
Of course, resort loungers, umbrellas, restaurants, and other facilities may still be reserved for paying guests.
During our stay at The Club Barbados, we enjoyed walking along the beautiful west coast towards Sandy Lane Resort.
The beach was gorgeous, and watching the sunset over the Caribbean Sea was one of those simple vacation moments I absolutely loved. π
Just remember to use designated public beach access points rather than walking through private resort property.
π Some of the Best Beaches to Explore in Barbados
One thing to understand about Barbados is that the beaches can be quite different depending on which coast youβre visiting.
The west coast generally offers calmer Caribbean waters, while the east coast faces the Atlantic Ocean, where waves and currents can be much stronger.
Here are a few beaches worth adding to your list!
π’ Carlisle Bay
Located near Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay is one of the islandβs most popular beaches.
Itβs known for beautiful turquoise water, soft white sand, snorkelling, shipwrecks, and opportunities to see sea turtles.
We visited Carlisle Bay during our vacation, and itβs definitely an area Iβd recommend exploring!
π΄ Paynes Bay
Located along the west coast, Paynes Bay offers beautiful sandy beaches, generally calmer waters, and wonderful sunset views.
Itβs a lovely area for travellers who enjoy a more relaxed beach experience.
βοΈ Miami Beach (Enterprise Beach)
Located near Oistins on the south coast, Miami Beach is popular with locals and visitors.
It has a sheltered section that can be lovely for swimming when conditions are suitable, along with shaded areas and a relaxed atmosphere.
ποΈ Accra Beach (Rockley Beach)
A popular south coast beach with nearby restaurants, shops, and access to the beautiful Richard Haynes Boardwalk.
A great option if you enjoy combining beach time with a little exploring!
π Bathsheba Beach
If youβre looking for dramatic scenery, Bathsheba on the east coast is absolutely worth visiting.
Itβs famous for its large rock formations, powerful Atlantic waves, and beautiful rugged coastline.
However, this is generally a beach Iβd recommend for sightseeing and photography rather than casual swimming due to strong currents and surf.
Travel tip: Always check local sea conditions before swimming, even at beaches normally considered calmer.
π Friday Night at Oistins Fish Fry!
If youβre visiting Barbados, one experience Iβd recommend adding to your itinerary is the famous Friday Night Fish Fry in Oistins!
Located on the south coast, Oistins comes alive on Friday evenings with locals and visitors gathering for delicious food, music, dancing, and a lively Caribbean atmosphere.
Youβll find freshly grilled fish, traditional Bajan dishes, local vendors, and plenty of island energy!
Some popular foods to try include:
β Flying fish
β Grilled mahi-mahi
β Macaroni pie
β Rice and peas
β Fish cakes
Itβs a wonderful opportunity to experience a little more of the local culture beyond your resort.
π My tip for neurodivergent families: Friday evenings can get quite busy and loud, especially with music and crowds. If someone in your family prefers a quieter dining experience, consider visiting Oistins earlier in the evening or on a different day.
π΅ Currency: Barbados Dollars or US Dollars?
Barbados uses the Barbadian Dollar (BBD).
The local currency is pegged to the US dollar at approximately:
$1 USD = $2 BBD
US dollars are widely accepted throughout the island, particularly in tourist areas.
However, change may be provided in Barbadian dollars, so itβs helpful to know the approximate exchange rate.
For Canadian travellers, remember that your Canadian dollars are a separate currency, and exchange rates will vary.
I recommend carrying some cash for smaller vendors, beach purchases, tips, and local experiences.
Credit cards are also widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and many businesses.
π Driving in Barbados
If youβre planning to rent a car, thereβs one important thing to remember!
In Barbados, you drive on the LEFT side of the road.
This can take a little getting used to if youβre accustomed to driving in Canada or the United States.
Some roads are also quite narrow, and traffic can be busy around Bridgetown and other popular areas.
Visitors should check the current local driving permit requirements with their rental company.
Renting a car can be a wonderful way to explore the island at your own pace, but taxis and organized excursions are great alternatives if youβd prefer not to drive.
πΊ Experiences Beyond the Beach
As beautiful as the beaches are, thereβs so much more to Barbados!
A few experiences worth considering include:
Harrisonβs Cave πͺ¨
We experienced the Signature Tram Tour during our visit, and it was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the islandβs geology while exploring the underground cave system.
My autistic adult son, Kyle, really enjoyed the experience. He was comfortable throughout the tour and especially loved exploring the nature trail and bird sanctuary afterwards.
Catamaran Cruises β΅
A wonderful way to experience the coastline, with some excursions offering snorkelling and opportunities to see sea turtles.
Bridgetown π§π§
Explore the islandβs capital, discover historic architecture, visit local shops, and experience a little of everyday Bajan life.
Island Tours π΄
If youβre visiting for the first time, an island tour is a great way to see different coastlines, local communities, and scenic viewpoints.
βοΈ Weather and What to Pack
Barbados enjoys warm tropical temperatures throughout the year, making it a wonderful destination for a sunshine getaway.
The drier season generally runs from December through May, while June through November tends to be wetter and overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season.
A few things I recommend packing:
β Lightweight, breathable clothing
β Comfortable walking shoes
β Swimwear and beach cover-ups
β Sunscreen and a hat
β A reusable water bottle
β Insect repellent
β A small waterproof bag for beach days
The tap water in Barbados is generally safe to drink, and North American travellers typically wonβt need a plug adapter for standard two-flat-pin outlets.
π Travelling to Barbados With an Autistic or Neurodivergent Family Member
As a mom to an autistic adult son, a neurodivergent individual myself, and a Certified Autism Travel Professional, I know how important it is to plan a vacation around the needs of each individual traveller.
Barbados can offer a wonderful combination of relaxing beach days, outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and opportunities to explore.
However, not every excursion, resort, or activity will be the right fit for every family.
A few things Iβd consider when planning:
π Choosing accommodations with enough space to relax and decompress
π Researching excursions ahead of time so there are fewer surprises
π Building downtime into the itinerary
π Considering noise levels, crowds, and transportation times
π Contacting resorts and excursion providers ahead of time to discuss individual accessibility or sensory needs
During our recent vacation, Kyle did very well with both our flights and several island experiences.
For me, watching him explore somewhere new, enjoy the activities, and build more confidence with travelling was one of the best parts of our family vacation. β€οΈ
π΄ My Final Thoughts on Barbados
Barbados is so much more than beautiful beaches and all-inclusive resorts.
Itβs an island filled with culture, history, incredible scenery, and wonderful opportunities to make lasting memories.
Whether youβre visiting for a romantic getaway, celebrating a special occasion, or enjoying a family vacation, thereβs something special about experiencing this beautiful Caribbean island.
And after returning 27 years after our wedding, I can definitely say Barbados will always have a very special place in my heart. β€οΈπ§π§

Iβd love to help you explore your options and find a vacation thatβs the right fit for you and your family!
