27 Years Later: Returning to Barbados to Renew Our Wedding Vows

Our vow renewal experience at The Club Barbados Resort & Spa

There is something incredibly special about returning to the place where your marriage first began.

In April 1999, my husband Scott and I travelled to Barbados to get married at a beautiful beachfront resort called Almond Beach Club. It was just the two of us, exchanging our vows in paradise, with resort staff stepping in as our witnesses.

Fast forward 27 years to October 20, 2026, and we found ourselves back at that very same resort, now known as The Club Barbados Resort & Spa, renewing our wedding vows.

Only this time, we weren't alone. Our two sons were there to share the experience with us, which made returning to Barbados even more meaningful.

Having experienced both a destination wedding and a vow renewal at the same resort, I thought I would share what the planning process looked like, what was included, and whether I would recommend this type of celebration to other couples.

Planning Our Vow Renewal at The Club Barbados

One of the things I have always loved about destination weddings is how simple the planning process can be, especially when you have an experienced wedding coordinator looking after the details.

Our wedding coordinator at The Club Barbados was Sophia Butcher, and we initially communicated with her by email before arriving in Barbados.

Our first steps were pretty straightforward. We needed to choose our ceremony date and time, decide on our preferred venue, and select any additional services that weren't included in our package.

Because we were staying in a One-Bedroom Garden View Suite, our vow renewal package was complimentary!

That was certainly a lovely perk of our stay, and I was pleasantly surprised by just how much was included.

What Was Included in Our Complimentary Vow Renewal Package?

Our package included:

  • A beautifully decorated wedding cake, with our choice of flavour. We chose strawberry!

  • A choice of ceremony venue. We decided on the beach.

  • A decorated wedding arch and ceremony setup.

  • An officiant to conduct our vow renewal ceremony.

  • Champagne for our first official toast following the ceremony.

  • A romantic dinner on the beach later that evening.

I also selected my bridal bouquet and Scott's boutonniere as part of the planning process.

For our beach dinner, we chose to order from Enid's Restaurant menu, which was a lovely way to end our celebration.

Considering the ceremony itself was included with our accommodation, I thought the package offered a wonderful experience without needing to spend a fortune on additional extras.

Of course, resorts and packages can change, so I would always recommend confirming exactly what is included at the time of booking.

How Easy Was the Planning Process?

Surprisingly easy!

There really wasn't a great deal of back-and-forth communication required.

We confirmed our preferred date and ceremony time, selected the details we wanted, and emailed a copy of our marriage certificate before travelling.

The day after we arrived at the resort, we met with Sophia in person to review the arrangements and sign our contract.

That was pretty much it!

I think this is one of the biggest advantages of having a destination wedding or vow renewal at a resort that regularly hosts these celebrations.

You have someone on-site who understands how everything works, knows the property, and is responsible for bringing the details together.

I trusted that Sophia knew what she was doing, and that allowed me to enjoy the experience rather than worry about every little detail.

For me, that simplicity is one of the biggest selling points of a destination wedding.

Our Vow Renewal Day: October 20, 2026

Our ceremony was scheduled for 4:00 p.m., and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day.

The temperature was around 31°C, with gorgeous sunshine and that wonderful Caribbean warmth that I love so much.

By late afternoon, the sun was beginning to move lower in the sky, making it a beautiful time for a beachfront ceremony and photographs.

We had arranged for a professional photographer, which was an additional expense outside our complimentary package.

Our photographer arrived approximately ten minutes before the ceremony and began by taking photographs of Scott and me, along with our two sons.

Having our boys there was such a meaningful difference from our original wedding in 1999.

Back then, it had been just Scott and me, with witnesses provided by the resort. This time, we were able to celebrate with the family we had built together over the past 27 years.

The Beach Ceremony

Our ceremony began right on time at 4:00 p.m.

The decorated arch was set up on the beach, with the beautiful Caribbean Sea providing the backdrop.

The officiant led us through our vow renewal, which lasted approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

It was simple, meaningful, and exactly the kind of ceremony I had hoped for.

There were no complicated timelines, no large wedding party to organize, and no overwhelming schedule to follow.

Just the four of us, a beautiful beach, and an opportunity to celebrate our marriage.

One Thing to Know About Beach Weddings in Barbados

Now, there is one thing I would definitely mention to anyone considering a beach wedding or vow renewal in Barbados.

Be prepared to have an audience!

Barbados beaches are public, and when you're getting married or renewing your vows directly on the beach at a resort, other guests and beachgoers can stop to watch.

And they certainly did during ours!

At times, it felt like half the resort was attending our vow renewal, dressed in their swimsuits and beachwear.

I will admit that I found it a little nerve-wracking having so many people watching what was supposed to be a personal moment.

It's something you don't necessarily think about when you picture your beautiful beach wedding.

If you're someone who prefers privacy or feels uncomfortable being the centre of attention, I would strongly encourage you to discuss alternative ceremony locations with your resort coordinator.

A beachfront ceremony is absolutely beautiful, but it isn't necessarily private.

And that's something worth knowing before making your decision.

Champagne, Photographs, and a Beachfront Dinner

Following our ceremony, we enjoyed a champagne toast and signed our vow renewal certificate.

Our photographer then took us around the beach and through the resort's beautiful gardens for additional photographs.

The photography portion lasted approximately 30 to 45 minutes, and it was lovely having a variety of backgrounds for our pictures.

Overall, the ceremony and main celebrations were relatively short and relaxed.

We weren't spending the entire afternoon following a strict wedding itinerary, which was something I really appreciated.

Our private dinner on the beach was scheduled for 7:00 p.m., leaving us with some downtime between the ceremony and our evening meal.

For dinner, we selected our meals from the Enid's Restaurant menu.

There is something really lovely about enjoying a meal on the beach in the Caribbean, especially after celebrating such a meaningful occasion.

It was a beautiful way to finish our vow renewal day.

Would I Recommend a Destination Wedding or Vow Renewal?

Absolutely.

And I say that not only as a travel advisor who specializes in destination weddings, honeymoons, and vow renewals, but also as someone who has personally experienced both.

When we originally married at Almond Beach Club in April 1999, the planning process was simple.

It was just the two of us, and the resort arranged witnesses to be present for our ceremony.

Twenty-seven years later, I found the process of organizing our vow renewal at the same property to be just as straightforward.

What I appreciate most is the simplicity of the experience.

There are certainly couples who dream of large, elaborate weddings with extensive decor, entertainment, and dozens of guests.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

But for couples who prefer something smaller, more intimate, and less complicated, a destination wedding can be a wonderful alternative.

Having a coordinator who knows the resort and understands how to organize these celebrations can make such a difference.

In our case, I didn't feel the need to oversee every detail because I trusted Sophia and the team at The Club Barbados to take care of everything.

And they did.

That doesn't mean every destination wedding will be completely stress-free or that every resort provides the same level of service. But our experience was a wonderful reminder of why I have always loved this style of wedding.

A Full-Circle Moment in Barbados

When Scott and I first arrived in Barbados in 1999, we were beginning our married life together.

We had no idea what the next 27 years would bring or that we would one day return to the very same resort with our two sons.

Being back in that familiar setting, celebrating our marriage and making another memory together, was a lovely full-circle moment.

And while the resort has changed names since our first wedding, the beautiful island of Barbados and the simplicity of exchanging vows beside the Caribbean Sea were just as special the second time around.

If there's one thing this experience reminded me of, it's that a wedding or vow renewal doesn't have to be elaborate to be meaningful.

Sometimes, the simplest celebrations are the ones we remember most.
