Why Choosing a Destination Wedding Was One of the Best Decisions We Ever Made
When my husband and I got married in 1999, we made a decision that was a little less common than it is today — we chose to get married in Barbados.
At the time, I was working as a travel agent, so I was comfortable navigating the travel side of things. Even so, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when it came to planning a wedding in another country.
What I discovered was that the entire process was surprisingly simple, stress-free, and enjoyable.
We chose the Almond Beach Club in Barbados (now known as The Club Barbados), and from the beginning, the wedding coordinator was wonderful to work with. Every detail was clearly explained, and we always knew what to expect next.
When we arrived in Barbados, we were able to settle into vacation mode almost immediately. The following day, we were taken into town to complete the legal requirements for our marriage. We visited the registry office, finalized our marriage licence, and met with the wedding coordinator to discuss flowers and the details of our ceremony.
Everything was organized and straightforward.
Just two days after arriving, we were married on the beach.
Because it was just the two of us, we asked a couple of fellow vacationers relaxing nearby if they would be willing to serve as witnesses. Not only did they happily agree, but they also helped take photos and videos for us. We had hired a professional photographer as well, but those extra candid moments made the day feel even more special.
The ceremony itself was beautiful, intimate, and relaxed.
And perhaps my favourite part?
Less than an hour after saying "I do," we were swimming in the Caribbean Sea.
No rushing between venues.
No worrying about seating charts.
No months of stress over decorations.
No pressure to entertain hundreds of guests.
Just the two of us, celebrating the beginning of our marriage in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Looking back, it was also significantly more affordable than hosting a traditional wedding at home. We were able to combine our wedding and honeymoon into one unforgettable trip, creating memories that have stayed with us for more than 25 years.
Today, destination weddings are more popular than ever, and I completely understand why.
They offer couples the opportunity to focus on what truly matters: each other.
Whether you're planning an intimate ceremony for two, inviting a small group of family and friends, or organizing a larger celebration at a beautiful resort, destination weddings can provide a unique blend of simplicity, romance, and value that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
As someone who planned her own destination wedding and now helps others plan their travel experiences, I still believe it was one of the best decisions we ever made.
