Why I became a Certified Autism Travel Specialist

When I decided to re-enter the travel industry, I knew a lot had changed. One area I felt particularly drawn to was helping individuals and families on the autism spectrum travel with greater confidence and less stress.

Why?

Because I know firsthand how intimidating travel with an autistic child can feel.

Travel often involves unfamiliar environments, changes in routine, long travel days, sensory overload, and a level of unpredictability that can be overwhelming for both children and parents. I remember feeling anxious before trips with my son, wondering how he would handle the airport, the flight, or being in a completely new place.

What I didn’t realize at the time was how much my own anxiety affected him. When I was on edge, he often became more anxious too. Looking back, if I had better understood how to regulate my own nervous system, I may have been better able to help regulate his.

As the years went on, I learned that successful travel with autism isn’t about having a perfect vacation. It’s about preparation, understanding your child’s unique needs, and having support along the way.

That realization is one of the reasons I chose to become a Certified Autism Travel Professional.

The certification gave me the opportunity to combine two things that are deeply important to me: my passion for travel and my experience supporting autistic individuals and their families.

As a mother of an autistic adult son and someone who has worked in public education for over 12 years supporting autistic students, I understand many of the challenges families face. I also understand the joy and confidence that can come from creating positive travel experiences together.

Having someone who understands those concerns can make a difference. Whether it’s selecting the right destination, finding a resort that offers autism-friendly amenities, discussing room locations, considering sensory needs, or simply talking through concerns before departure, sometimes the greatest support is knowing you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

My goal is to help families feel empowered to travel. I want parents to know that vacations are possible. New experiences are possible. Creating wonderful family memories is possible.

Most importantly, I want families to know they are not alone.

Becoming a Certified Autism Travel Professional was inspired by my own journey as a parent. Today, I am proud to use that experience to help other families confidently plan their own adventures.

If you’ve been dreaming about a vacation but aren’t sure where to start, I’d love to help you take that first step.

Because travel with autism is possible—and together, we can make it happen.
