Exploring Harrison’s Cave in Barbados: An Underground Adventure Worth Experiencing 🌴
When you think of Barbados, beautiful beaches, turquoise waters, and sunshine probably come to mind. But there’s so much more to this Caribbean island than its stunning coastline!
Today, our family had the opportunity to explore one of Barbados’s most fascinating natural attractions — Harrison’s Cave — and it was an experience I’m so glad we included in our vacation.
Discovering the Beauty Beneath Barbados
We started our visit with the Signature Tram Tour, which takes visitors underground to explore an incredible limestone cave system.
As we travelled through the caves aboard the tram, our guide shared interesting information about the history of Barbados, how the island was formed, and the natural processes that created the caves.
One of the most fascinating parts of the tour was learning about the stalactites and stalagmites.
These beautiful limestone formations develop over thousands of years as mineral-rich water slowly drips through the caves. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, while stalagmites grow upward from the cave floor.
Seeing these formations up close was incredible!
The caves also feature underground streams, pools, and beautiful rock formations that make you appreciate just how amazing nature can be.
Exploring Beyond the Caves 🌿
After our tram tour, we spent some time exploring the nature trail and bird sanctuary.
It was a lovely way to continue our visit and experience another side of Barbados’s natural beauty.
We enjoyed walking along the trail, taking in the tropical surroundings, and seeing the birds.
It’s definitely worth allowing yourself a little extra time to explore the grounds rather than leaving immediately after the cave tour.
Our Experience Travelling With an Autistic Adult ❤️
As many of you know, autism-inclusive family travel is something I’m particularly passionate about, both personally and professionally.
Our oldest son, Kyle, is autistic, and travelling together has given me firsthand experience understanding how different activities and environments can affect individuals with unique needs.
I’m happy to share that Kyle absolutely loved our visit to Harrison’s Cave!
He found the Signature Tram Tour incredibly interesting and was completely comfortable throughout the experience.
He didn’t experience any difficulties during the tour and genuinely enjoyed learning about the caves.
He also loved exploring the nature trail and bird sanctuary afterward.
As a mom, it’s always wonderful seeing him enjoy new experiences, especially when we’re travelling somewhere different.
Of course, every autistic individual has their own preferences, sensory sensitivities, and comfort levels. What works beautifully for one person may not be the right fit for another.
While I can’t speak for everyone’s experience, I can share that Harrison’s Cave was a very positive experience for Kyle and our family.
For families considering this excursion, it’s worth remembering that the tour takes place underground, where lighting, sounds, and enclosed surroundings may be considerations for some travellers.
Is Harrison’s Cave Worth Visiting?
In my opinion, absolutely!
If you’re planning a vacation to Barbados and looking for something different from the beach or pool, Harrison’s Cave is an excursion worth considering.
It’s educational, interesting, and gives visitors an opportunity to discover a completely different side of the island.
I particularly enjoyed learning about the geological history of Barbados and seeing the incredible limestone formations throughout the caves.
And knowing how much Kyle enjoyed the experience made it even more special.
